Build something and sell it

The money is not in knowing AI. It is in knowing what to point it at.

Start here, because everybody gets this backwards

Nobody pays you for AI. They pay you because something is costing them money and you made it stop.

The roofer on the last page does not want a voice agent. He wants the twelve thousand dollars he lost when his phone rang and he was three storeys up. Sell him that. The technology is just how you deliver it.

Which means the skill you actually need is noticing where a business is bleeding — and you can practise that at every job you have ever worked.

The phone that answers itself $200–500 setup, $200–400/mo

Roofers, plumbers, HVAC, towing, landscaping, salons, dentists

Answers when they cannot, captures the name and the job, texts them the details. The whole pitch is one number: what is one missed job worth to you?

Hardest part: not the build. Getting a busy contractor to sit still for fifteen minutes.

The missed-call text-back $100–300 setup, $100–200/mo

Any business with a phone

Simpler cousin of the above. Call comes in, nobody answers, the caller instantly gets a text that says "sorry we missed you, what do you need?" Cheap to build, easy to prove, and it is the easiest first sale on this page.

Start here if you have never sold anything.

The paid audit $300–500 per audit

Small businesses that know something is broken but cannot name it

You sit with them for an hour, map how work actually flows, and hand back a document showing exactly where time and money leak out. You sell nothing else on that call. Half of them hire you to fix what you found.

Why it works: you get paid to do the sales call.

Turn one thing into ten things $300–1,500/mo

Coaches, realtors, gyms, anyone who posts

They record one video. You turn it into the clips, the captions, the email, the posts. They were never going to do it themselves, and now it happens every week without them.

Hardest part: keeping it sounding like them and not like a robot.

Small tools people buy once $15–99 each

Anyone with a niche you already understand

A calculator, an estimator, a checklist, a tracker — one page that does one annoying job well. No clients, no meetings, no scope creep. It sells while you sleep, but only if you picked a problem you actually know.

Honest warning: slowest to make the first dollar, best if you hate sales.

If you do one thing this week

  1. Think of a business you already know from the inside — where you work, where family works, where you spend money.
  2. Name one thing there that wastes time or loses money. Be specific. Not "they're disorganized." More like "the phone rings during service and nobody picks it up."
  3. Work out what that costs them per month, in dollars.
  4. Take that number to the owner and ask if you can fix it.

You will notice none of those four steps involve building anything. That is the point. Build after somebody says yes.
